Holiday home "Casa Scampolotti" in Camerino (Marche, Macerata)
This the ideal place for a quiet and relaxing holiday in Italy, far away from the well-known tourist spots - a wonderful country for nature lovers, hikers, bikers of all sorts and also for those who enjoy seeing mediaeval churches, abbeys and towns.
Detailed description:
Costa San Severo (1,800 ft.) is an old mountain hamlet near the ancient university town of Camerino. It is situated on an old pilgrim’s way, on a slope of below Monte Primo (3,600 ft.). The village consists of a handful of houses, most of which are lived in only in the summer vacation. There are only three permanent inhabitants: Mary and Uli, your hosts, and Bice, an elderly lady who lives in her house in the upper village, a bit up the street.
The asphalted country road that leads to our house continues to the upper village where it turns into a mountain track.
The holiday house (approx. 2000 sq ft) is part of an old farm building made of natural stone, recently restored and remodelled into a vacation villa of superior quality. It is at one side of the courtyard of our complex, at about 30 yards distance of the ancient farmer’s house (15th Cent.) in which we, Mary and Uli, live. On the valley side of the complex there are approx. 6 acres – newly planted – olive grove and forest. The grounds are freely accessible for our guests.
The house consists of 3 twin-bedrooms, 2 bathrooms (WC, bidet, wash basin and shower) and kitchen (gas stove with electric oven, dishwasher and fridge/freezer). Below, there is a living/music/work room (CDs, books in several languages). Half a storey lower there is a large living/dining room and two smaller rooms on a mezzanine (open to the living). Ideal for children and young people!
Outside, there is a roofed-over terrace (loggia) accessible from the living room.
There is a garage for our guests.
The house is centrally heated (gas/pellets).
Washing laundry is possible on request (use of our washing machine and drier). Iron and ironing board are present in the house.
According to season there are – to a limited degree – eggs and fresh vegetables available. On your arrival you will find in the kitchen a "welcome package": small samples of the local specialties and a bottle of wine. We will see to it that, if you so wish, milk, bread and some other necessities for the first hours are available in the kitchen when you arrive.
There is a small shop with coffee bar in the next village, Seppio (15 min. walk, 5 min. by car). Bigger shops/supermarkets and excellent, inexpensive restaurants you find in the vicinity. Many of the neighbouring towns and village have a weekly market – each one on a different day of the week.
It is necessary to have a car. There is opportunity to rent a car locally.
There is only one strict rule: Please DO NOT SMOKE in the house!

Description of the area:
Camerino existed already in the 5th Cent. B.C. It is a small town (approx. 7,000 inhabitants) with a colourful history. The old Romans never conquered Camerino, rather, the town was always a faithful ally of Rome and its inhabitants were also Roman citizens. In the late Middle Ages Cesare Borgia briefly conquered and occupied Camerino (1502/03), before the rightful Dukes of Varano regained it! The town is proud of its small, but ancient university – one of the oldest in Italy (founded in 1377) with, next to the traditional Faculty of Law, Faculties of Mathematics, Natural Sciences (Physics, Chemistry and Biology, Geology and Environmental Studies), Veterinary Medicine and Architecture.
San Severino, Tolentino, Visso and many other small towns and cities are in the vicinity. All possess their own art treasures in their mediaeval walls. Lonely and hidden behind mountains and in deep valley are many abbeys, lived-in ones and ruined ones, often of great historical importance.
